ASCE has honored Thomas Walski, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, F.EWRI, F.ASCE, with the 2019 Julian Hinds Award for his ability to bring theory and practice together in the field of urban water engineering and planning, and for his prolific production of papers, presentations, reviews, and books which have strongly contributed to and influenced the field of engineering.
Walski has made major contributions in the fields of water distribution hydraulics; water and wastewater system management, operation, design, and cost estimating; economics of water resources systems; water and sewer system rehabilitation; and computer applications in environmental engineering. He has been especially prominent, for over 30 years, in the field of water distribution systems analysis and modeling. In that time he has contributed to approximately 30 books on this subject – including as lead author on the most referenced book in the field, Advanced Water Distribution Modeling – coauthored 78 refereed journals articles, authored or coauthored over 350 papers, reports, discussions, editorials, or manuals, and taught the fundamentals of water distribution system modeling to thousands of students.
Within EWRI/ASCE Walski has served in many posts, including committee chair, journal editor and associate editor, and active member of many committees. He has received both best paper awards and outstanding reviewer and associate editor awards for his work with the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management. He is active in AWWA and has served as chair of several of its committees.
The Julian Hinds Award is given to recognize the author or authors of that paper which is judged to make the most meritorious contribution to the field of water resources development. The award may also be made to an individual for notable performance, long years of distinguished service, or specific actions that advanced engineering in the field of planning, development, and management of water resources.
