Structural Writing Team Receives Moisseiff Award

ASCE has honored the writing team of Michael Pollino, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., M.ASCE; Derek Slovenec, S.M.ASCE; Bing Qu, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE; and Gilberto Mosqueda, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE, with the 2019 Moisseiff Award for the paper “Seismic Rehabilitation of Concentrically Braced Frames Using Stiff Rocking Cores,” published in the September 2017 issue of Journal of Structural Engineering.

This paper advances the understanding of complex nonlinear system-level seismic behavior of steel concentrically braced frames while proposing a rehabilitation technique with a validated procedure. The results show rehabilitative designs that are able to improve existing buildings from potentially collapsing to achieve satisfactory drift performance objectives.

Pollino is associate professor of civil engineering at Case Western Reserve; Slovenec is graduate research assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve; Qu is associate professor in the College of Engineering at CalPoly; and Masqueda is associate professor of civil engineering at the University of California at San Diego.

The Moisseiff Award is given to the author or authors of an important paper published by the Society dealing with the broad field of structural design, including applied mechanics, as well as the theoretical analysis or construction improvement of engineering structures, such as bridges and frames, of any structural material.
