Vickery This Year’s Cermak Medal Honoree

ASCE has honored Peter J. Vickery, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, with the 2020 Jack E. Cermak Medal for his contributions to the development of hurricane hazard models for risk analysis and for his major impact on the development of building codes and standards in North America.

Vickery is the principal engineer for Applied Research Associates Inc., in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he is involved with development of hurricane hazard models for use in risk analyses, coastal flood and wave risk modeling, building codes and wind tunnel studies.

He specializes in catastrophe modeling; extreme wind climatology; hurricane modeling and risk assessment; probability, statistics and reliability; dynamic loading and response of offshore structures; and structural dynamics and vibrations, among other areas.

ARA also develops damage and loss models for prediction of hurricane-induced damage and loss studies, performs hurricane Met-Ocean studies, participates in poststorm damage surveys and failure estimates, and analytically predicts wind-induced response of towers, chimneys and offshore structures.

This medal was established by the Engineering Mechanics Division / SEI to recognize Dr. Jack E. Cermak’s lifetime achievements in the field of wind engineering and industrial aerodynamics.
