When London Bridge Train Station opened in 1836, its engineers surely couldn’t have envisioned that 182 years later the railway terminus not only would still be in operation but that it would be pointing the way toward the future of smart infrastructure and construction.
But here we are.
The station’s five-year improvement plan is a model of cutting-edge smart infrastructure.
Kenichi Soga, Ph.D., M.ASCE, a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-chair of the ASCE Infrastructure Resilience Division’s Emerging Technologies Committee, outlined how the new London Bridge Station and the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction is changing the way civil engineers approach infrastructure projects.
