Society Invites Crittenden for Freese Award & Lecture

ASCE has honored John C. Crittenden, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, NAE, with the 2020 Simon W. Freese Environmental Engineering Award and Lecture for his extraordinary accomplishments in using fundamental scientific principles and current research findings to solve the most challenging water quality problems.

Crittenden is one of the world’s foremost experts in physicochemical processes for environmental systems. A pioneer in water treatment systems, his work in granular activated carbon made heating of air prior to entrance into granular activated carbon systems common practice. His research has also developed a rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT). Now considered an industry standard, RSSCT uses a simplified set of experiments to simulate the operation of full-scale granular activated carbon treatment systems, saving significant time and resources in developing treatment regimen.

The Simon W. Freese Environmental Engineering Award and Lecture is awarded to a distinguished environmental engineer whom the ASCE Executive Director will invite to deliver a lecture at a given meeting of the Society.
