Li Honored With Robert H. Scanlan Medal

ASCE has honored Qiu-Sheng Li, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2020 Robert H. Scanlan Medal for his outstanding contributions to wind engineering and structural mechanics, from fundamental research to engineering applications.

 Li has contributed superbly to wind engineering, industrial aerodynamics and structural mechanics in comportment with the requirements of the Scanlan Medal. He was involved in numerous wind engineering and structural dynamic studies on major building and structural developments in Asia and the Pacific region. His research areas include atmospheric boundary layer wind structure, wind effects on high- and low-rise buildings, bluff body aerodynamics, computational wind engineering, structural dynamics, and structural health monitoring and control. He has published 320 refereed international journal papers and four books, and is one of the most cited researchers in civil engineering. This reflects the influence and impact of his research work.

He made groundbreaking achievements in the field of computational wind engineering (CWE), such as developing a general inflow turbulence generator for accurate simulation of turbulent inlet boundary conditions, a new dynamic subgridscale model suitable for unstructured or hybrid grids, and a new method for fluid structure interaction for turbulent flows with high Reynolds numbers. In particular, he proposed a new simulation approach for evaluation of wind-driven rain (WDR) based on a Eulerian multiphase model that greatly reduces the complexity inevaluations of WDR results and simplifies boundary condition treatments.

Li has made substantial contributions to the practical application of computational fluid dynamics in wind engineering and to professional practice in wind engineering. He has also published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers on engineering mechanics over the past three decades. He is the recipient of the 2016 Jack E. Cermak Medal.

The Robert H. Scanlan Medal is awarded to an individual in recognition of distinguished achievement in engineering mechanics based upon scholarly contributions to both theory and practice. The areas of achievement will generally be structural mechanics, wind engineering and aerodynamics.
