Leite the Halpin Award Honoree

ASCE has honored Fernanda L. Leite, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction for scholarly contributions made at the interface of construction project management and building and civil information modeling.

Leite is a nationally and internationally recognized construction engineering leader who has developed a research program at the interface of construction project management and information modeling. Her goal is to significantly affect how the construction industry delivers projects; this is to be done with more efficient processes such as safety seamlessly integrated with planning and scheduling, and formalized organizational knowledge enabling proactive planning and monitoring.

Leite’s research can be divided into two main thrusts: 1) building and civil information modeling (BIM/CIM), and 2) fundamental construction project management. She has been focusing her BIM research on specific knowledge areas, such as design coordination, model generation, building energy performance simulation, building permitting, and construction safety. The connection between all these application areas is her focus – What information needs to be modeled and how can it be efficiently and effectively formalized and retrieved.

The Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship that advances construction engineering as a science.
