Dougherty Honored With Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award

ASCE has honored Timothy K. Dougherty, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award for adherence to ASCE’s Code of Ethics in his daily practice and dealings with other professionals in the industry. His composure and integrity are exemplary and, through his leadership and mentoring, have served as a benchmark for many young professionals.

Dougherty’s work both individually and as a mentor to engineers and other design professionals engaged in design-build services demonstrates the leadership and uncompromising commitment to ethical engineering practice that this award is intended to recognize. Dougherty currently serves as the National Director for Alternative Delivery at HDR Inc., a national consulting firm.  He has been an active member of ASCE, volunteering his time to engage in many initiatives and programs that support the civil engineering profession and young engineering professionals. He adheres to ASCE’s Code of Ethics and refers to it as his standard for ethical decision making when facing challenges.

In the alternate delivery space, significant pressures brought by cost considerations lead some to employ questionable tactics to secure contracts. Because of Dougherty’s and HDR’s approach to business and ethics, that is not the type of practice they will participate in to the detriment of another firm. Dougherty works with his teams to provide efficient designs while complying with the requirements, spirit and intent of the code of ethics governing the engineering community.

The Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award was instituted by the Board of Direction in 2005 to recognize an engineer practitioner’s incident-specific or career-long application of ethics to achieve conspicuous success in a leadership role.
