Castelli Honored With Kapp Award

ASCE has honored Raymond J. Castelli, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2020 Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award for more than 40 years of contributions in geotechnical engineering, and particularly for providing innovative solutions that overcame problems and optimized the cost of major infrastructure projects.

Castelli has spent a career providing services of a high quality. He is characterized as always doing the right thing and being selfless in furthering the profession. He always has time to mentor and teach young engineers, sharing his knowledge and experiences and training them to seek innovative solutions. Castelli has also been occupied with several complex geotechnical endeavors involving the design builder of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, marine and transit facilities, and highway projects. Additionally, he has contributed geotechnical review and technical support services to develop the design parameters report for the design of the complex support of deep excavations needed to successfully build the Istanbul Strain Roadway tunnel in Turkey. 

The Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award recognizes contributions to design or construction of foundations, earthworks, retaining structures or underground construction.  Emphasis is placed on constructed works in which serious difficulties were overcome or substantial economies were achieved.
