ASCE has honored Thomas E. Boothby, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, with the 2019 George Winter Award for his expertise as a structural engineer and his passion for the ability of art, history, and culture to catalyze a widespread professional understanding of the interdependence of engineering and the humanities.
Boothby brings the unique perspective of both an architect and an engineer to the assessment, evaluation, and preservation of civil engineering structures of all types. He has maintained equal concern for the technical and social aspects of engineering as well as for art and architecture throughout his career. He is recognized for analysis and load-rating of masonry arch bridges, but adds to his structural vision the facets of aesthetics and historic preservation for bridges throughout the United States and the Republic of Ireland. His knowledge of various languages and his continuing investigations into medieval architectures are known worldwide and have allowed him to be involved in investigations of early Christian churches in Milan, Rome and Dublin.
The award is named for Dr. George Winter, world-renowned teacher and researcher at Cornell University, who died in 1982. The George Winter Award is intended as a recognition of the achievements of an active structural engineering researcher, educator, or practitioner who best typifies the late Dr. Winter’s humanistic approach to his profession: an equal concern for matters technical and social, for art as well as science, for soul as well as intellect.
