Bechtel Pipeline Award Goes to Bell

ASCE has honored Graham E.C. Bell, Ph.D., P.E., FNACE, F.ASCE, with the 2019 Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award for his exemplary 35-year career as a researcher, practitioner, and educator, fostering a dynamic evolution of the industry for standard-of-care issues for the condition assessment, rehabilitation, and corrosion control of linear and vertical civil infrastructure.

Bell has more than 35 years of experience in water infrastructure. He is nationally and internationally known as an expert on condition assessment, rehabilitation, and corrosion control for linear and vertical civil infrastructure. He has been responsible for technical delivery and quality for over 50 projects nationwide related to civil infrastructure. He has been principal investigator and primary researcher on more than 10 Water Research Foundation studies related to corrosion, condition assessment, instrumentation, and water quality.

In 2015, he was named a Fellow of NACE International for his leadership, technological innovation, and applied research to improve corrosion control practices and awareness in the water and wastewater industries. Indeed, he has over 75 published works and has been an invited speaker  to over 65 major industry events. Additionally, he has played active leadership roles in professional societies including ASCE UESI Board, AWWA, and NACE. Bell has participated in such major projects as City of Phoenix Transmission Main Inspection and Assessment Program; Southern Nevada Water Authority, Stage I and II Condition Assessment; San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Corrosion Control Master Plan; and Orange County Sanitation District, Corrosion Management Plan.

Bell is a professional engineer registered in nine states. He also has NACE International Certifications as a cathodic protection and corrosions specialist. He hold a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering with minors in fluid mechanics and materials, a master of science, and a bachelor of science from the University of California.

The Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award recognizes outstanding achievements by a member of ASCE who, through research, planning, design, or construction, has advanced the art, science, and technology of pipeline engineering.
