ASCE honored the Bayonne Bridge: Replacement of Main Span Roadway and Approach Structures with the 2020 Outstanding Civil Engineering achievement award, as announced Friday evening, March 13, at the Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Gala in Washington, D.C.
The OCEA award, established in 1960, recognizes the project that best illustrates superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society.
The Bayonne Bridge connects Bayonne, New Jersey, with Staten Island, in New York City. Through a first-of-its-kind construction sequence, the replacement roadway was built over the existing roadway and within the arch structure – keeping both road and sea traffic open.
This year, for the first time, ASCE celebrated 10 projects as OCEA Honor Award recipients, with the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco announced as the OCEA Silver award winner and Scotland’s Queensferry Crossing the OCEA Bronze winner.
The OPAL Awards, meanwhile, honor a civil engineer’s career achievements in the five categories of construction, design, education, government, and management. Each winner was recognized and spoke at the Gala.
The 2020 honorees:
In construction, Ted Craddock, P.E., M.ASCE, assistant deputy director, California State Water Project – for innovation and excellence in construction of civil engineering projects and programs.
In design, Ronald M. Noble, P.E., L.S., D.CE, D.PE, D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE, president and senior principal engineer, Noble Consultants – G.E.C. Inc. – for innovation and excellence in civil engineering design.
In education, Raymond J. Krizek, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, Hon.M.ASCE, NAE, director, master of project management program and executive management for design and construction program, Northwestern University – for demonstrated excellence in furthering civil engineering education.
In government, James Starace, P.E., M.ASCE, chief engineer, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey – for demonstrated leadership of public sector projects and programs.
In management, Sergio A. Pecori, P.E., F.ASCE, chairman and CEO, Hanson Professional Services Inc. – for exceptional management skills in his professional career.
The OPAL Gala also honored SAM100 Construction Robotics with the Charles Pankow Award for Innovation; Kent S. Sorenson Jr., Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, with the Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research; and Scott LaMar with the ASCE Excellence in Journalism Award.
