Barry Recognized With Professional Practice Award

ASCE has honored Brock E. Barry, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, with the 2020 Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award for extraordinary service and leadership as a civil engineering educator and practitioner and as a significant contributor to the ethical practice of engineering, serving his profession and community by inspiring future engineers to technical, professional and ethical excellence.

Barry is a gifted and articulate leader dedicated and committed to supporting the civil engineering profession, training our country’s future military leaders and volunteering his time with the organizations he is associated with. He is a fellow of ASCE, and recently chaired ASCE’s Task Committee on the Code of Ethics, where his passion for engineering ethics and leadership capabilities were key to successfully revamping the Code through an inclusive and collaborative process. He has further served on the National Institute for Engineering Ethics; as Chair of the National Center for Professional and Research Ethics; as a leader in upholding and teaching ethics at the US Military Academy; and on multiple ASCE, ASEE and other organizational committees on engineering ethics and professional practice.

He personally exemplifies positive ethical behavior as an educator and mentor in his faculty role at the USMA, and as a volunteer Scout Leader and Youth Sports Coach in his community. His 12 years as a practicing consulting engineer prior to working in academia laid a strong foundation for his career-long leadership and commitment to ethical engineering practice that continues in his current teaching and research efforts. He is committed to ongoing personal improvement and learning, both traits of a true leader, as exemplified by his completing the U.S. Military Academy Center for Faculty Excellence two-year Master Teacher Program.

The Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award was instituted by the Board of Direction in 2005 to recognize an engineer practitioner’s incident-specific or career-long application of ethics to achieve conspicuous success in a leadership role.
