Engineers Week 2019 is here and ASCE members have geared up to take part. This year’s theme, Engineers: Invent Amazing, is on par with everything members have accomplished so far.

ASCE Announces 2019 New Faces of Civil Engineering – Professionals

ASCE celebrated its 2019 New Faces of Civil Engineering – Professional, a group of 10 talented young professionals who are taking the civil engineering industry by storm. From helping communities around the world to combating climate change, these innovators continue to make their mark on the profession.

Los Angeles Younger Member Forum Inspires the Next Generation

The Los Angeles Younger Member Forum hosts special events during Engineers Week to inspire students to become leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math. Members plan fun and engaging activities like Elementary School Day, Middle School Day, High School Day, Girl Day, and Girl Scouts Day. From egg drop competitions to a university tour, each day allows K-12 students to discover engineering in different ways. The action-packed week, led by dedicated volunteers, is a platform to show students that engineering is not only important but fun too.

ASCE Members Participate in Annual Future City Competition

Now in its 27th year, DiscoverE’s Future City challenges middle-school students to imagine, design, and build sustainable cities of the future. Many ASCE members serve as team mentors or regional coordinators. Don Wittmer, P.E., M.ASCE, is a regional coordinator in Chicago and continues to volunteer in both the Illinois Future City Competition and as the judging coordinator for the national competition in Washington, DC. ASCE 2019 President Robin A. Kemper, P.E., LEED AP, F.SEI, F.ASCE, also joined in to judge students’ creations.

A team from Sacred Heart Middle School in Boise, ID, earned ASCE’s award for Most Innovative Design of Infrastructure Systems. This year’s first-place prize, sponsored by Bentley Systems, went to Warwick Middle School in Lititz, PA.

National Capital Section Continues Family Day Tradition

The National Capital Section hosted a booth during Family Day in Washington, DC. Hundreds of kids, parents, and educators went to the National Building Museum for the event, which has become a yearly tradition of sparking kids’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The section ran its popular hands-on Windy City Tower activity.
