Writing Team Receives State-of-the-Art CE Award

ASCE has honored Xiaofeng Liu, P.E., M.ASCE, and Jie Zhang, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2020 ASCE State of the Art of Civil Engineering Award for their book “Computational Fluid Dynamics: Applications in Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Treatment,” published by EWRI, June 2019.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has many uses, at least two of which – improving water flow distribution across UV reactors and retrofitting clarifiers to eliminate short-circuiting – would never have been possible with traditional hydraulic models. CFD modeling brought a new level of understanding to engineering teams and project owners.

Since CFD requires expertise in fields outside of typical civil/environmental engineering work, such as numerical analysis and computational science, a majority of civil and environmental engineers are not aware of its usefulness. This authors’ primer on CFD application in water, wastewater and stormwater treatment is an initial step to provide a solution to this knowledge gap.

The book provides a valuable introduction and overview of CFD and how it can be used in the water and wastewater industry. It reviews procedures for conducting flow, transport, and reaction simulations using CFD, along with specific practical examples of water, wastewater and stormwater treatment applications.

The ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award is presented to the individual, individuals or committee that has prepared, for the benefit of the profession, the most outstanding paper that reviews and interprets state-of-the-art scientific and technical information.
