The Gift of Giving

The holiday season is upon us. Although it is a time of celebration, it’s also a time for gratitude and giving.

Civil engineers have much to be thankful for. With salaries continuing to trend upward, we earn a good living as well as the respect of the public. Entrusted with protecting the public health, safety and welfare, civil engineers truly have a profound impact on our quality of life. President Herbert Hoover, himself an engineer, recognized their importance, aptly noting, “the engineer himself looks back at the unending stream of goodness which flows from his successes with satisfaction that few professions may know.”

The great privilege of being a civil engineer also carries great responsibility. It is incumbent on civil engineers to give back to their profession. It is their duty to engage in public policy and discourse, to advance the profession and to prepare future civil engineers to sustain that growth.

As the voice of civil engineering, ASCE has a duty to you, the profession and the public. We speak with a single, trusted voice on federal, state and local public policy. We provide the tools engineers need to stay current. Perhaps most importantly, we advance professional, technical and ethical standards through education and by enforcing a Code of Ethics. And in addition to the wide variety of member benefits, ASCE provides many volunteer opportunities for you to serve your profession.

I encourage you to use your skills to give something back. Volunteer with a committee, publication or conference through ASCE or one of our technical Institutes. Get involved with your local ASCE Section or Branch. Lend a hand in engineering projects for underserved communities with our Community Engineering Corps. Inspire the next generation of civil engineers through our Mentor Match program. Influence the profession as a speaker, author, Key Contact and advocate. Give back through the ASCE Foundation to support these and many other important ASCE programs. The opportunities are endless.

Learn more and get involved. Thank you for giving back, for your work as a civil engineer and for your ASCE membership and service.
