Andrew Thomas Rener, P.E., F.ASCE, president of Bouma, a national commercial interior finishing contractor in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Rener joined Bouma as vice president of operations in 2013 and was promoted to COO and, subsequently, president. He leads the business providing self-perform, prime contracting and off-site manufactured prefabricated building components, serving customers across the country.

Through his work from an early age at his parents’ construction company, Rener developed a love for construction that led him to the construction engineering program at Lawrence Technological University. There he was vice president of the ASCE Student Chapter, co-chaired the ASCE Student Regional Conference Committee and captained the student steel bridge team. After graduation, he joined Barton Malow Company as a field engineer. While working his way up through project manager, project director and senior director, he completed his master’s degree and thesis.

Passionate about civil engineering education, he taught as an adjunct in the Civil Engineering Department at LTU for 15 years, once receiving the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. He assisted in developing a master’s degree focus on Design-Build Project delivery and regularly guest-lectured in construction-related courses. He was also an adjunct at the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in construction.

Rener has served on two ASCE national committees – the Committee on Student Activities and the Committee on Faculty Development – chairing both. He was a corresponding editor for ASCE’s Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice as well as a member of the National Student Steel Bridge Competition Rules Committee. He has been a member of Lawrence Technological University’s Civil Engineering Department Advisory Board since 2000, holding the title of Emeritus Board Member.

Rener is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan, a Designated Design-Build Professional and a licensed builder in eight states.
