Prolific ASCE Writer and Editor Now Fellow

Zhanping You, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Dr. You has completed research projects related to road materials, pavement engineering and sustainable building materials. Over a period of years he served as director of the Center of Excellence for Transportation Materials, which is a partnership between Michigan DOT and Michigan Tech. He has led research projects spanning the engineering practice of roads to pavement science with funding from federal, state and local agencies.

His contribution to pavement and materials research has led to journal articles, book chapters and advances in engineering practice. You has published over 300 papers in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production; ASCE’s Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Journal of Engineering Mechanics and Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering; Road Materials and Pavement Design; and Construction and Building Materials.

His involvement with ASCE extends to organizing specialty workshops and promoting special issues for journals. He also completed four ASCE special publication books, among them “Geotechnical Special Publication 213: Road Pavement and Material Characterization, Modeling, and Maintenance” and “EMI Special Publication 1: Pavements and Materials: Testing and Modeling in Multiple Length Scales.”

You has been an associate editor for ASCE’s successful Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering since 2008, for which he also coordinates journal article reviews, and he has guest-edited for the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and International Journal of Geomechanics.

Further, he served as the chair for the ASCE Engineering Mechanics Institute’s Pavements Committee and CI’s Bituminous Materials Committee. As the committee chair, he was responsible for organizing annual and midyear meetings as well as many other tasks. He contributed significantly to the membership growth and development of the committees. He has currently been working to facilitate a strong connection between the Bituminous Materials Committee and many other organizations.

You was awarded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship in 2001. In both 2004 and 2005, he was awarded the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Faculty Fellowship. 2009 saw him receive the ASCE fellowship of Excellence in Engineering Education (ExCEEd), and in 2018 he was named as Outstanding Advisor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech. He earned the prestigious Michigan Tech Research Award in 2019 and the University Distinguished Professorship. He was named a Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials in 2020.

He earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 2003.
