Our nation’s infrastructure suffers from a lack of funding, and this jeopardizes the safety of our communities. While civil engineers have the expertise and tools to address major challenges associated with ports, dams, drinking water, inland waterways, levees, and wastewater, solutions to these challenges require investment. Throughout 2018, ASCE members and staff advocated for improvement in all 16 infrastructure categories, including water-related categories. Over 210

I recently provided management training for a civil engineering firm and this question came up multiple times. Civil engineering managers struggle with delegation for many reasons, but when they do actually start to delegate, a huge challenge they face is balance. How do you find the balance between not checking in enough with your staff, and micromanaging them? Here are three specific actions you can
Infrastructure is good. Sustainable infrastructure is better. Rapid urbanization is a growing reality in infrastructure development. According to the Global Environment Facility, it’s estimated that more than two billion additional people will be living in cities by 2050. The need for sustainable infrastructure is more critical than ever. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, an organization cofounded by ASCE in 2011, has made it easier for

Knowledge of sustainable development should be a key requirement for engineers, according to a joint statement of intent signed today by ASCE, the British-based Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. The statement was issued as part of the Global Engineering Congress, hosted in London by ICE and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations in London. More than 2,000 engineers –
