Life Member, Former Publisher of Physics and Chemistry Research Dies at 91

Robert H. Marks, M.ASCE, an ASCE Life Member who shifted from a civil engineering career to one that provided crucial research in chemistry and physics, has died at 91.

Time spent at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology getting Navy officers’ training during World War II, followed by service in the submarine naval reserve, served him well after the war when he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from MIT. He joined ASCE in 1947.

Marks’ work turned to timely dissemination of research results in physics and chemistry. He was director of publishing programs at the American Institute of Physics and, beginning in 1988, the American Chemical Society. By the time of his retirement from ACS, the entire core research literature in physics and chemistry had been digitized and was accessible online.

Marks was active in MIT alumni affairs for many years. He spent the majority of his life in Brooklyn, where he was an active Methodist, and most recently resided in Savannah, GA.
