Infrastructure isn’t partisan, it’s personal.
May 13-20, 2019, marks the seventh annual Infrastructure Week. We’re united around one message: America’s future will be shaped by the infrastructure choices we make today. As a founder and member of the Steering Committee, we’re joined by more than 400 affiliated organizations nationwide to encourage policymakers to invest in the future of infrastructure.
We’ve seen a renewed focus on infrastructure in Washington in the past few weeks. In late April, House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Schumer met with President Trump to discuss solutions for our nation’s deteriorating infrastructure. They agreed to a $2 trillion investment package and are meeting again in a few weeks to discuss funding.
States are increasing available revenue as three state legislatures voted to increase their fuel taxes this year. We’re optimistic about the bipartisanship on the general parameters of an infrastructure bill. And we look forward to passing legislation that provides adequate investment and sound policy for our roads, bridges, water systems, and more.
Civil engineers are uniquely qualified, and I believe obligated, to speak to the condition and needs of our infrastructure. The public welfare and our planet are dependent on infrastructure that’s safe, resilient, and sustainable. I encourage you to get involved, participate in activities near you, and speak out for infrastructure. Because inaction is the greatest cost.
