Grow Your Career by Embracing Risk

“I believe that the most important single thing, beyond discipline and creativity, is daring to dare.” – Maya Angelou

The riskiest career move is not taking one. So why do we try our best to avoid risk? Sometimes there’s a lingering fear of failure, a lack of support, or you’re simply not ready.

Growth stems from risk. So, to be led toward success, you’ll need to be brave and take a couple of steps forward. You’ll never know until you try.

In this episode of the ASCE Interchange, Thalia Valkanos, E.I.T., A.M.ASCE, a project engineer at CMA Engineers Inc. and former legislative correspondent in the United State Senate, shares her story on how embracing risk early in her career led her to success.

“When you do something that scares you so much, everything else seems so easy, and that is something I’ll be able to take with me in my personal life and my career,” said Valkanos. She believes that just the thought of making a career change can empower you enough to take the risk and go for it.

  1. Thanks Thalia for sharing your experience. Very commendable indeed! One question on behalf of those who may be thinking of taking the risk – how did you find and land on this opportunity?
