ASCE has named Martin (Marty) J. Fertal, P.E., M.ASCE, as the Society’s new chief operating officer.

Effective Jan. 4, Fertal will serve as the internal leader of the organization, coordinating the annual operations plan and budget, and providing a strong day-to-day leadership presence. He will have direct responsibility for the program areas of membership, marketing and sales, continuing education, publications, and communications, as well as oversight of the operational areas of finance, customer service, and HR.

“I look forward to adding Marty’s leadership to the ASCE staff team in the new year,” said ASCE Executive Director Tom Smith. “I know that his exceptional leadership skills and strategic approach to organizational growth and business development will greatly benefit the Society, our members and volunteers, and our staff.”

Fertal most recently served as the principal for program and implementation management for the Logistics Management Institute, where he was responsible for key LMI strategic initiatives including reshaping corporate program review structures, achieving improved operational performance, and implementing successful management strategies for LMI’s programs and business pursuits. Before LMI, he held senior positions with Engility Corporation, TASC, Northrop Grumman, TRW, and BDM International.

A civil engineer, Fertal has served as an ASCE Innovation Contest judge since 2016, while also taking a leadership role in the Society’s Future World Vision project – first as part of an advisory team that guided the research effort in 2018 and a year later as part of the FWV design group. He’s also served as an advisor to several members of the ASCE Department Heads Coordinating Council.

Fertal holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia. Married with two sons, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, biking, and traveling together. In his spare time, he volunteers for the National Park Service.
