ASCE has honored Josephine Emerick, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award for her exemplary professional conduct and service, her direct impact on the improvement of civil engineers’ employment conditions and her professional guidance of future civil engineers.
Emerick has demonstrated her strong technical and leadership capabilities with her performance on a multimodal transportation study in Missouri to address congestion relief, improve safety and provide access to opportunity. This required extensive stakeholder involvement and public outreach utilizing innovative methods to reach very diverse populations. As part of the Missouri Board for Professional Engineers and the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, Emerick has had a direct impact on her state’s, and the Nation’s, professional engineers. Her participation in these groups has influenced the professional civil engineer’s role in the protection of public health, safety and welfare.
She has supported women in the civil engineering profession throughout her career, including her through participation in her employer’s Women’s Focus Group and as keynote speaker at the University of Missouri’s Mother/Daughter Engineering Day. In addition, she was keynote speaker at Missouri’s newly licensed Professional Engineers Ceremony and the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering Convocation.
Emerick has touched a vast community with her passion in civil engineering. She exemplifies “the best of the best.”
The Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award is presented to a member, except an Honorary Member, of the Society who is judged to have contributed substantially to the status of the engineering profession by establishing a reputation for professional service.
