Board Retreat Sharpens Focus on Member Value in 2019

The calendar hasn’t turned yet, but the 2019 ASCE Board of Direction’s year is already off to a great start.

Members of the Board gathered for a two-day retreat, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Leesburg, VA, to jumpstart their Society work for next year.

“It went well,” said ASCE President Robin Kemper. “I’m very excited about our year.”

If Kemper’s vision for her presidential year could be distilled to one word, it would be “focus.”

The Board has developed six strategic goals over the last two years, with the primary goal being that “an ever-growing number of people in the civil engineering realm are members of, and engage in, ASCE.” So at last week’s retreat, the conversation centered on focusing on that member-value goal.

“We want to create strong alignment in all we are doing and trying to achieve,” Kemper said. “We do a lot and there’s a lot of effort from a lot of different people throughout our Society. We want to focus that work in one direction.”

The retreat also served as an informal orientation for the Board’s new members, ahead of their first official Board meeting next month in Orlando.

“We had a lot of team-building, and a lot of open discussion,” Kemper said. “It’s really going to help us as we move forward.”
