ASCE has honored Andres Baquerizo, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Roebling Award for his leadership in innovative deep foundation construction technologies.
Baquerizo has successfully completed many challenging projects and is constantly seeking out innovative solutions for the most difficult of problems. Consequently, his foundation solutions are often the result of his “thinking” outside the box.
Through his work, he has impacted the local trends with respect to large-diameter augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles and can now install ACIP piles up to 42 inches in diameter that rival conventional drilled shafts in capacity. He has pushed the envelope with regard to installation of low-headroom foundations by installing 24-inch-diameter piles almost 90 feet long using low-headroom equipment. Where other deep foundation contractors might shy away from a particular project because there is not an exact equipment fit, Baquerizo frequently “redesigns” his piling rigs to fit unique job situations.
The Roebling Award recognizes and honors an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of construction engineering.
