Band Tabbed as New Fellow

Barry Band Jr., P.E., S.E., F.ASCE, a senior associate structural engineer at AECOM with 23 years of experience in structural design, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

While still a graduate student at Virginia Tech, Band developed equations to predict the effective moment of inertia bar joists, and the equations are used in the AISC Design Guide 11: “Floor Vibrations Due to Human Activity.”

During his career with AECOM, Band has been a strong technical leader in structural design. He was the primary author of the Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) 3-301-01 Structural Engineering in 2010. As a result of the work on this criteria, he has worked on several revisions to the UFC. Band recently worked with the Department of Defense structural working group to upgrade 24 of the Unified Facility Guide Specifications for steel and concrete.

In his spare time he volunteers with Engineering Ministries International (EMI). His work with this group has led him on mission trips to Mexico, Haiti and Sierra Leone, where he worked with a building design team to plan and design buildings for local ministries. At home, Band has dedicated time and effort to building homes for the underprivileged through Habitat for Humanity and repairing houses for low-income homeowners through Renovation Alliance.

Band graduated from the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in 1994 with a B.S. in civil engineering. He earned a master of science in structural engineering from Virginia Tech in 1996.

He is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia and Texas. Additionally, he is a registered structural engineer in Illinois and Utah.
