ASCE Honors Mosalam as New Fellow

Khalid M. Mosalam, Ph.D., C.Eng, P.E., F.ASCE, the Taisei Professor of Civil Engineering and director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center at UC Berkeley, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Mosalam lectured for courses in finite element method and design of reinforced concrete at Cornell University before joining the Department of CEE at the University of California, Berkeley as an assistant professor in 1997. He currently conducts research on the performance and health monitoring of structures and infrastructural systems. He is active in areas of assessment and rehabilitation of essential facilities such as bridges and electrical substations, and in research related to resiliency and sustainability of structures. His research covers large-scale computation including probabilistic modeling and experimentation including hybrid simulations.

The courses he teaches are related to FEM, dynamics of structures, prestressed concrete structures, experimental methods in structural engineering, design of reinforced concrete structures, structural engineering, behavior of reinforced concrete, structural analysis (theory and applications), and advanced topics in CEE: applications of nonlinear finite element methods. He also regularly teaches classes for executive education related to “resilience-based engineering of smart infrastructure systems.”

Mosalam has contributed more than 400 publications to the profession between his journal papers (114 articles), book chapters, technical reports and conference papers.

He is the recipient of the 2006 ASCE Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize, the 2013 UC Berkeley Chancellor Award for Public Services, and the 2015 EERI Outstanding Paper Award in Earthquake Spectra. He has been a visiting professor at Kyoto University in Japan, Middle East Technical University in Turkey, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He was a High-End Expert in Tongji University and is a core principal investigator for the Internet of Things & Societal Cyber Physical System Lab, a part of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute.

Mosalam obtained his B.S. with honors in civil engineering (1988) and M.S. (1991) in structural engineering from Cairo University, and his Ph.D. majoring in structural engineering and minoring in theoretical and applied mechanics (1996) from Cornell University.
