ASCE has honored Bernard G. Dennis Jr., M.ASCE, with the 2020 Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award for his tireless efforts to advance the understanding and appreciation of past civil engineers and their works.
Dennis has served ASCE through his writing, editing and coordination of the ASCE publication “Engineering the Panama Canal: A Centennial Retrospective” (ASCE, 2014), leadership for chairing and membership service on the ASCE History and Heritage Committee, research and coordination of the annual ASCE Conference history and heritage sessions for several years, a stint as president of the ASCE National Capital Section, history service including newsletter articles on National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks, and his years of service as the ASCE liaison with the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian and the Historic American Engineering Record of the National Park Service.
The Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award is presented to those persons who, through writing, research or other efforts, have made outstanding contributions to a better knowledge of, or appreciation for, the history and heritage of civil engineering.
