ASCE has honored Robert B. Sowby, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, with the Daniel W. Mead Prize for Younger Members for the paper “To Uphold and Enhance the Profession.”
Canon 6 of the ASCE Code of Ethics states, “Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession and shall act with zero tolerance for bribery, fraud, and corruption.” Recently, the media has exposed examples of “pay-to-play” scandals over a broad range of organizations, from college admissions to engineering and construction firms. A pertinent question was, How does this affect the Civil Engineering profession?
Sowby is water resources engineer with Hansen, Allen & Luce Inc., in South Jordan, Utah.
The Daniel W. Mead Prize for Younger Members is awarded to the author or authors of a paper on professional ethics. Each year the specific topics, if any, of the contest for the forthcoming year are selected by the Committee on Younger Members.
