ASCE has honored Amanda A. Tanaka, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2020 Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement. She is recognized for professional achievement in service to the advancement of the profession, evidence of technical competence, high character and integrity, and contributions to public service outside her career.
Tanaka has nine years of experience in the private sector and has worked on various wastewater, site development and water planning projects. She joined the ASCE Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum when she returned to Hawaii after college. She served as a YMF officer and is currently the YMF website chair. She is also active in the Hawaii Water Environment Association and American Water Works Association–Hawaii Section.
Tanaka was recognized by the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies as the Young Engineer of the Year in 2019, and as the Outstanding Young Civil Engineer in the Private Sector at WRYMC 2020. She has served on the Younger Member Forum executive committee, co-chaired the 2019 ASCE Western Regional Younger Member Council, is currently co-chairing the 2020 WEF/AWWA Pacific Water Conference, and her contributions and achievements in all her endeavors have been a big part of the engineering community. Tanaka has been a motivated and spirited leader in her young career, and her leadership and contributions to engineering community are what make her an excellent candidate for the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award.
The Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement is made to younger members of ASCE (35 years of age or younger) who are judged to have attained significant professional achievements by the degree to which they have served to advance the profession; exhibited technical competence, high character and integrity; developed improved member attitudes toward the profession; and contributed to public service outside their professional careers.
