ASCE has honored Anshel J. Schiff, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2020 Le Val Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction Award for his significant contributions in advancing knowledge of the seismic performance of electric power lifeline systems.
Schiff is always willing to share his knowledge and mentor young engineers. He has devoted a significant amount of his retirement life to practical engineering research, and has been very active in identifying research topics and leading a number of major experimental research projects at several U.S. universities to explore various strategies to protect critical electric power assets. He has disseminated his findings to representatives of various electric power utilities through annual meetings of the EPRI Seismic Studies Group and the Inter-Utility Work Group, which is expected to improve seismic resilience of electric power systems in the U.S. and beyond.
Schiff is among the most accomplished seismic resilience champions who have been working tirelessly to protect the electric power system from seismic hazards across U.S. and beyond. As an ASCE member, he has documented postearthquake lifeline performance through numerous ASCE postearthquake investigations, advanced state-of-the-art knowledge through various research studies, improved awareness through active participation in numerous technical conferences, and given talks to power industry groups and encouraged them to conduct seismic analyses and/or implement appropriate mitigation measures.
The Le Val Lund Award for Practicing Lifeline Risk Reduction recognizes an individual for contributions to the practice of reducing risks to lifeline systems and preparing communities for natural and man-made hazards.
