In short, civil engineers are society’s unsung heroes. That’s why it is important to celebrate the difference civil engineers make in our world.
Each year, ASCE partners with DiscoverE to hold Engineers Week. The event aims to help a child discover the world of engineering. Various workshops and hands-on activities spotlight engineering in an exciting way for them. This year’s theme is “Pioneers of Progress.”
History is proof that engineers, like pioneers, help society cross frontiers. Civil engineers led us through mountains with tunnels, connected communities with bridges, and created alternative sources to harness energy. Now it is your chance to inspire future pioneers. Engineers Week is the perfect way to do that while celebrating this great profession.
The Future City Competition calls on middle school students to imagine, research, design and build cities of the future. For four months, teams are challenged to create solutions to citywide sustainability issues 100 years from now. You can get involved by leading a team, volunteering at a competition or serving as a mentor or judge.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day specifically aims to inspire girls’ futures. The worldwide campaign helps young girls develop an interest in engineering, build their confidence in problem-solving skills and create a STEM identity. You can share your engineering expertise as a Girl Day Role Model or a Girls Night Out host.
But celebrating engineering does not have to be limited to one week. DiscoverE is also ASCE’s official partner for “Dream Big: Engineering Our World.” Together, the organizations help engineers bring engineering to local schools. The “Dream Big” educational toolkits provide engaging activities and lessons geared to K-12 students. Civil Engineering Clubs also allow high school students to connect with engineering mentors to further explore the profession. Whether you’re an engineer, teacher or parent ASCE gives you the tools to bring engineering to life.
