The world is rapidly changing. There are exciting new opportunities and difficult challenges ahead for civil engineers: alternative energy, autonomous vehicles, climate change, smart cities, high-tech construction and advanced materials, and policy and funding are just a few.
To educate our members and spark dialogue on the latest and future practices in the civil engineering field, ASCE’s Future World Vision will be highlighted at the Society’s flagship annual event, the ASCE Convention, to be held this Oct. 10-13 in Miami. Attendees will be the first to explore a working proof of concept for this immersive experience; they will be invited to participate in demonstrations and workshops in which they help shape the project’s future development.
Future World Vision uses data-driven, in-depth, scenario-planning analysis to reimagine infrastructure through five potential future worlds. By provoking new ways of thinking and novel ideas about how the convergence of these future trends will transform how we live, work and play in our cities, this project will help put civil engineers in a position to lead not just today but five decades into the future.
Opening with a dynamic keynote session featuring Alex McDowell, Future World Vision’s creator and a pioneer in the concept of “world building,” the convention will also feature in-depth sessions and technical tours. A highlight of the convention experience will be an interactive Future World Vision booth where participants can “tour” a floating city of the future through a virtual 4D experience. The project’s creators and developers will be on hand to discuss participants’ reactions and record their input for future iterations.
The Future World Vision booth will be the centerpiece of a new conference space called Experience ASCE. This vibrant area will provide an opportunity for informal networking, for discussion of conference content and ideas, and for learning more about other ASCE programs and benefits through multimedia displays and interaction with ASCE staff and volunteer leaders.
This is a pivotal and exciting time for civil engineering. Society entrusts civil engineers to anticipate, reimagine and prepare for a rapidly changing world, and we must begin now to prepare for a vastly different future.
Be part of the future of civil engineering and join us at the ASCE Convention in Miami. We hope to see you there.
