ASCE has honored Clyde Chambliss Jr., P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Outstanding Public Official Award for his impeccable service and dedication to the State of Alabama, as well as to the civil engineering profession and land surveying professionals.
Chambliss has contributed tirelessly to the public and to the civil engineering profession while currently serving as a senator for the State of Alabama, and as an elected official at the Autauga County Commission for 12 years.
During his term in office he has used his sound engineering judgment, knowledge and leadership to promote legislation that positively impacted the public and engineering/land surveying professionals. He spearheaded a bill that was signed into law by the governor which addressed gaps in Alabama’s qualifications-based selection process and revitalized the composition of the Board of Licensure via coordination with various entities such as the Board, the Alabama Civil Engineering and Professional Land Surveying Societies and the American Council of Engineering Companies. He supported the incorporation of a legislative mandate to require the use of a qualifications-based selection process for acquiring engineering and land surveying services for both public and private works.
Chambliss also actively led the Senate to address the infrastructure needs of the state by initiating the development of a Legislative Drive-in to help bring engineers from across the state to the capital in order to advocate for bills and issues that affect the civil engineering profession as a whole.
The Outstanding Public Official Award (formerly known as Civil Government Award) recognizes those members of the engineering profession who have rendered meritorious service in elective or appointive positions in government.
