Bartholomew Award Received by Road Tech Expert

ASCE has honored Lily Elefteriadou, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2019 Harland Bartholomew Award for contributions to enhancing mobility using advanced transportation technologies in Gainesville, FL.

Elefteriadou has made significant contributions to transportation research and education, through her publications as well as her teaching and service record. She has distinguished herself as one of the world’s foremost experts in the field of traffic operations, traffic flow theory, and simulation. Her work has been extensively incorporated into one of the most important documents in her area of research, the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), which is used in the United States and worldwide.

She has built a strong collaborative relationship with the City of Gainesville and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to develop I-STREET, a real-world testbed for the development, testing, and deployment of advanced transportation technologies. Through her leadership, Gainesville has been exploring various technologies for enhancing mobility and safety in the region and beyond.

In another project Elefteriadou is leading, funded by the National Science Foundation and FDOT, her team is developing methods and tools for joint optimization of signal control and vehicle movement in order to improve mobility by exploiting the capabilities of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Elefteriadou has published extensively (nearly 80 refereed articles and more than 120 conference papers and reports) and has been invited to present her work at many conferences and institutes worldwide.

The Harland Bartholomew Award is presented to a Society member who is judged worthy of special commendation for enhancement of the role of civil engineers in urban planning and development.
