Greg Henneke, P.E., F.ASCE, senior executive vice president of multidiscipline engineering consulting firm American Structurepoint, headquartered in Indianapolis, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
For over 40 years, Henneke has contributed to the civil engineering field via his work in the private and public sectors. He has shown strong leadership and vision in helping build American Structurepoint into a preeminent Midwest consulting firm. He also served the public sector through his project work and managerial leadership at the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the City of Indianapolis.
Henneke’s public sector work began in 1975 when he joined INDOT as a design engineer in the Bridge Design Section. He progressively advanced to more responsibility over the next 17 years. He eventually was promoted to division chief of the Program Development and Design divisions. In this role, he managed 230 people involved in all aspects of highway, bridge, and traffic design, including the management of all private-sector design consultant work. A key accomplishment as division chief of design involved increasing production of construction projects from an annual level of $280 million to $500 million in just three years.
In the mid-1990s, then–Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith recruited Henneke to join the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (IDPW) as a director to oversee his “Building Better Neighborhoods” initiative to improve the city’s infrastructure. This $519 million program involved 477 infrastructure improvements.
Henneke joined American Structurepoint, then known as American Consulting Inc., in 1997. During his tenure as executive vice president, the firm has seen the Transportation Group more than quadruple its revenue and grow to become a preeminent transportation engineering firm in Indiana.
Accomplishments of note have included Henneke’s innovative financing for the 56th Street widening project in Lawrence, Indiana, with a compressed schedule; his leadership of the record-breaking LPA design and construction schedule and the extensive coordination with Norfolk Southern Railroad that produced the Indiana Avenue Underpass project in Elkhart; and his impact on the I-65/70 Market Street interchange modification for the City of Indianapolis, which greatly improved traffic flow in the downtown area. Most notable is Henneke’s role as program manager for the $700 million IDPW RebuildIndy campaign which revitalized Indianapolis’ deteriorating infrastructure. Most recently, Henneke oversaw the winning pursuit and leadership of a multiyear stormwater program management contract with IDPW that produces a $40 million per year capital improvement program.
Henneke earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1975 and an MBA from Indiana University in 1996. He is a 16-year member of the Rose-Hulman Department of Civil Engineering Advisory Board, achieving emeritus status in 2016. He is also the founder and current president of the Indiana State Transportation Workers Foundation. This nonprofit offers monetary assistance to INDOT employees’ immediate family members upon a death in the line of duty. The foundation also offers hardship relief and scholarship programs.
