Andrew P. Romanek, P.E., PMP, F.ASCE, a civil and environmental engineer specializing in project management, remediation and water/wastewater infrastructure improvements, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
In college, Romanek found one of his passions – that of environmental engineering, specifically remediation work – having supported research related to the use of geographic information systems in building a digital facility description and in completing risk assessments for an oil refinery.
He found his other passion, project management, in an 18-year career at Camp Dresser & McKee (now CDM Smith). Having been promoted to senior project manager within five years of the start of his career, he had the opportunity to manage multiple, complex environmental projects annually. Romanek has spent the past three years working with The Dextra Group, where he specializes in project and program management for the environmental industry. His focus there is on improving project delivery and performance for both private and public sector clients and on bringing a competitive advantage to his clients’ environmental management activities.
Romanek has had the privilege of working on and/or managing several high-profile environmental projects in his career:
- He has completed assessment and remediation activities at over 100 sites, including several sites where downgradient receptors were impacted by or threatened by contamination.
- He supported and managed portions of remediation and redevelopment at a Brownfields site in Alexandria, Virginia. Among others, this site is now home to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- He was the program manager for a Capital Improvements Program for the City of East Point, Georgia, that was focused on reducing sewer overflows. Termination of the City’s Consent Decree for overflows was achieved two years ahead of schedule.
- He is part of a team addressing sewer overflows for the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Several initiatives led by Romanek have or will result in treatment capacity gains in the tens of millions of gallons per day.
Throughout his academic and engineering career, Romanek has been an active member of ASCE in his local community. He has served in multiple committee roles, including as President of the ASCE student chapter at Notre Dame as well as President of the ASCE Chattanooga Branch. He values those who have mentored him throughout his career and seeks opportunities to pass on his knowledge and experience to others.
Romanek graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin with a master’s degree in environmental engineering. He is a licensed engineer in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. He is also a Project Management Professional certified by the Project Management Institute.
