ASCE has honored Erol Tutumluer, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2020 James Laurie Prize for career contributions to the advancement of transportation engineering in the field of transportation geotechnics, which provides key knowledge to building sustainable pavement and railroad track infrastructure.
Tutumluer is an internationally recognized expert on the geotechnical aspects of pavement and railbed structural design and performance. He has published prolifically. His work includes fundamental modeling, analysis, innovative laboratory scale testing and full-scale testing for pavement subgrades and granular base courses.
He is working on cutting-edge research that continues to make a difference in transportation, economy and environment. He has developed a custom-designed advanced laboratory test device, UI-FastCell, and conducted experimental and analytical modeling research which has indicated that unbound aggregate layers should be modeled as nonlinear and anisotropic to account for stress sensitivity.
Tutumluer’s solid research contributions are clear evidence that he has been an intellectual “thought leader” in the field. However, arguably his greater contribution is his professional leadership in the field of pavement geotechnics.
The James Laurie Prize recognizes contributions to the advancement of transportation engineering in research, planning, design or construction.
