Former chief of planning for Army Corps in Detroit dies at 88

Carl Argiroff, one of Michigan’s most dedicated of public and municipal servants, has died. He was 88.

Argiroff

Argiroff, P.E., M.ASCE, was a Life Member of ASCE, and worked for the federal government for 32 years. He was chief of planning at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Detroit District, and received the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award twice: in 1980 for his management of the Extended Season Navigation Program and in 1988 in recognition of his entire federal career.

He loved Detroit. On graduating from Wayne State University in 1955 with a degree in civil engineering, he married a fellow student, with whom he celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary in 2020.

A respected professional as well as skilled planner and engineer, he was an important figure on key 1970s Army Corps projects that attracted national attention. He held himself to the highest standards of integrity and hard work, and inspired the same in others.

Argiroff was a 55-year member of the Society of American Military Engineers. He and his wife, Susan, traveled throughout the world in the years after his retirement.
