Brad Cross, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., F.ASCE, a professor of civil engineering atSouthern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Cross has extensive experience in the structural design and preservation of buildings. In 1983 he began work with the architectural engineering firm of Allison, McCormac, and Nickolaus, in Baltimore, where he was employed until 1989, and continued to work as a structural engineer in Maryland until 1992. He has been a professor with SIU since 1992, where he also performs research in the areas of historic preservation, the seismic retrofit of existing structures, structural dynamics, finite element analysis, engineering education, and bridge instrumentation and design.
He is a member and past chair of the Structural and Earthquake Engineering Technical Committee of the St. Louis Section of ASCE, one of the founding members of the New Madrid Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and a former associate editor for Seismic Effects of ASCE’s Journal of Structural Engineering. Cross was co-chair (with John Finke of Jacobs) of the 2006 ASCE Structures Congress in St. Louis. He is currently a member of the ANSI/TP-1 National Design Standard for Metal Plate Wood Truss Construction Committee.
He received his professional engineering license in Maryland in 1987 and his Illinois structural engineering license in 1997.
Cross was awarded his bachelor of science in civil engineering in 1984 from the University of Maryland. He was awarded his Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1992, where his thesis research focused on the seismic retrofit of historic brick buildings.
