Civil Engineers Must Prepare for the Future

Civil engineers are essential to solving the significant issues facing the planet, both today and tomorrow. They serve as systems integrators and work on complex projects with diverse global teams. They must be competent, collaborative and ethical. They must be innovators, environmental stewards, managers of risk and active in public policy. And ultimately, civil engineers must be effective leaders.

ASCE introduced iLead this year with early-career professionals in mind, to help them excel in their careers. The program provides civil engineers with everything they need to become effective leaders.

There are three programs within iLead:

• The Power Skills Series is a round of in-person sessions that will leave members with increased confidence in leadership and deepened interpersonal skills.
• The Younger Member Leadership Symposia was expanded to a two-day event and is hosted by the ASCE Committee on Younger Members. The experiential leadership workshop is open to all ASCE Younger Members.
• Finally, the Career Booster Webinar Series, brought to you by ASCE members, are free webinars on various topics to help you succeed in areas such as time management, ethics and more.

iLead gives Younger Members the opportunity to learn from peers and seasoned experts who are eager to mentor and help others prepare for future challenges.

In addition to iLead, there are many other ways civil engineers can hone leadership skills through volunteer opportunities. Through ASCE you can get involved in the ASCE Mentor Match program, lead a committee, present at a conference, participate in community service projects, advocate for infrastructure and much more.

While improving your own skills and advancing your career and professional network, you’ll also advance the profession and make a difference in the world, a win-win.
