Indrajit J. Ghosh, a widely traveled civil and environmental engineer on nuclear power projects who served as a local ASCE president in South Carolina and Washington state, has died at the age of 73.
Ghosh, P.E., F.ASCE, began his career in 1967 in his native India, then left for the United Kingdom a year later. At the height of nuclear power projects, he emigrated to the United States. From 1973 until 2010 he was employed by a number of companies, including Bechtel and Enercon Services Inc., a major engineering services provider to the nuclear industry. He retired in 2010 but remained active in the profession, periodically visiting his homeland and lecturing on civil engineering subjects at the Indian Institute of Technology, in Gujarat.
He was a licensed civil engineer in California who received his B.S. from Calcutta University in 1964, and his M.S. from the University of Surrey in 1967.
The ASCE Life Member enjoyed the respect of his peers. Ghosh served as president of ASCE’s Central Savannah River Valley Branch in South Carolina from 1994 to 1996, and as president of the Columbia Section in Richland, WA, from 2000 to 2001. Most recently he belonged to the San Luis Obispo Chapter and the Los Angeles Section.
As Columbia Section president, he compiled a comprehensive history of the Section’s first 50 years with the help of his wife and two daughters, even publishing it from his home.
