Patricia J. Culligan, Ph.D., C.Eng, F.ASCE, chair and Robert A.W. and Christine S. Carleton Professor of Civil Engineering at Columbia University, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Culligan was recently appointed the Matthew H. McCloskey Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Internationally recognized for her expertise in water resources, porous media flow and transport and geoenvironmental engineering, her work focuses on sustainable groundwater and waste management, smart cities applications, and the use of advanced measurement and sensing technologies to improve water, energy and environmental management. Over the years, Culligan’s contributions have advanced understanding in areas ranging from groundwater contaminant transport and remediation to urban green infrastructure for stormwater management.
Culligan’s professional contributions to ASCE include service as an editorial board member of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geotechnical Engineering, chair of the Geo-Institute’s Award Committee, co-chair of the 12th Panamerican Conference on Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering and the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium, and member of the Board of Governors of the Geo-Institute. Culligan has also served on the U.S. National Academies Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board and chaired the National Academies Standing Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering.
She is actively engaged in community outreach and citizen science programs and has received numerous awards for her mentoring and teaching of undergraduate and graduate engineering students. She is the author or coauthor of more than 170 technical articles.
Culligan received her B.Sc from Leeds University, England, and her M.Phil and Ph.D. from Cambridge University, England.
