Robert E. “Bob” Boyer, a noted pavement engineer and consultant who promoted Superpave mix design, has died. He was 80.
Boyer, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, a retired Air Force colonel, consulted with a vast number of industry clients over his career. Over a 15-year tenure with the Asphalt Institute in Panama City, Florida, he delivered no fewer than 300 presentations on performance-graded asphalt binders and the Superpave mix design system, as well as on state-of-the-practice construction and quality issues. He was the Institute’s senior regional civil engineer.
his work included developing programs and workshops to facilitate AIR 21 and Vision 100 funding authorizations associated with grants to commercial and general aviation airport pavement projects. He played a major role at the National Asphalt Training Center, producing test procedures and training materials toward implementation of Superpave into state DOT methodology.
He was a past chairman of three ASCE committees, and also of ASCE Management Group C. He was a technical adviser on ASCE’s Bituminous Materials Committee and past chairman of the Air Transport Division. Other affiliations include SAME and the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists.
Boyer graduated from Purdue University and was a professional engineer in Kentucky and Florida.
