Yinhai Wang, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, a professor of transportation engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Washington, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Wang is also the founding director of the UW Smart Transportation Applications and Research Laboratory (STAR Lab) and has served as director for Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium (PacTrans), USDOT University Transportation Center for Federal Region 10, since 2012.
He was the 2018-19 president of ASCE’s Transportation & Development Institute. Under his leadership, T&DI completed a restructuring of all technical committees, launched an “Engineering Smart X for Smart Cities” task force for standard development and initiated a new council to focus on education and workforce development. Wang started the ASCE Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Impact Committee in 2017 and co-chaired the 2018 ASCE International Conference on Transportation and Development (ICTD). He will also co-lead the 2020 ASCE ICTD, to be held in Seattle in May.
Wang’s active research fields include traffic sensing, transportation safety, e-science of transportation, big-data analytics, traffic operations and simulation, smart urban mobility, etc. He has received three U.S. patents, published over 180 peer-reviewed journal articles, and delivered more than 190 invited talks and nearly 280 other academic presentations. He serves as a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing Committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the IEEE Smart Cities Technical Activity Committee, and as associate editor for three journals, including Journal of Transportation Engineering Part A, Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems, and PLOS One.
He was the winner of the ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering Best Paper Award for 2003, the Chinese Overseas Transportation Association’s Outstanding Leadership Award in 2012, the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Innovation in Education Award for 2018, and the Chinese Institute of Engineers–USA Seattle Chapter’s Asian American Science and Engineering Innovation Award in 2019.
