Tor J. S. Anderzen, P.E., F.ASCE, a senior aviation engineer at HDL Engineering Consultants LLC, in Palmer, Alaska, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Anderzen has 14 years of airport planning, design and construction experience. After a 10-year career as a land surveyor, he returned to school to obtain both bachelor and master’s degrees. He went on to perform planning, design and construction administration services for several airports in the Midwest and northwest, and at many locations in Alaska.
He first joined ASCE through the student chapter at Michigan Technological University in 2004, and has been active in in the Society since 2007, serving as an officer in the Eastern Branch of the Montana Section, the Montana Section, and the Anchorage Branch. He is now the Alaska Section past president.
Anderzen is also the committee chair for ASCE Alaska Section’s infrastructure report card, after having led the preparation and release of the first one in 2017. Since its release he has been instrumental in presenting the report card to various groups in the Alaska Community, including legislators, Gov. Walker, Chamber of Commerce groups in Anchorage, Juneau and Matsu, and fellow engineering groups in Anchorage and Matsu, as well as in giving radio and TV interviews. Currently, Anderzen is leading the Section’s efforts to prepare the state’s 2021 release.
He is also active as an Advocacy Captain for ASCE in Alaska, and stays in contact with state and national legislators during the year to advocate for infrastructure and engineering. He serves on several other Society committees, including the Committee on America’s Infrastructure, the State Government Relations and Grassroots Committee, and the Committee on Preparing the Future Civil Engineer.
Anderzen received ASCE’s Engineering Advocate of the Year award in 2017, which was presented during the ASCE Legislative Fly-In in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the election committee for the Matanuska Electric Association. Another of his passions is to visit with K-12 students and share about science and engineering topics.
His degrees in civil engineering are from Michigan Technological University, and he is a licensed professional engineer in Alaska and Montana.
