Gupta Welcomed as Fellow

Biman Gati Gupta, Ph.D., C.Eng., F.ASCE, a civil engineer who has over 38 years in industrial design, construction and consultancy services and six more in research, publication and academic activity, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Gupta’s experience with construction of mega-thermal power plants began when he was made a senior engineer with the National Thermal Power Corporation and with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, multinational giants in India.

He thereafter joined Webcon Consultancy Organisation Ltd., in Kolkata. Until his retirement in 2013, he served the company in various capacities, among them senior consultant, chief consultant and general manager of technical design, techno-economic evaluation, bid preparation and negotiation with architects and other service providers. The team finalized contracts on such projects as IT, textile and automobile parks, export processing zones, jute and food processing complexes, and logistics, electronics and water supply projects. Gupta’s work extended also to tourism, smart-city development, and infrastructure of major industrial townships.

Experienced as well in preparing detailed project reports and negotiating with government and financial institutions for project implementation, Gupta has worked, since retiring, with the government of West Bengal as both a technical expert on a rural development project and as a program coordinator for minor irrigation projects, both financed by the World Bank.

Gupta joined ASCE’s India Section in 2011 as a treasurer, and has since served actively with the Section toward the betterment of the civil engineering community. He presented research papers as a speaker at the ASCE-EWRI World Environmental & Water Resource Congress (Florida, 2016) and the Indian Engineering Congress (Kolkata, 2016).

He has published more than 10 articles in various international journals and is an editorial board member of the American Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering.

Gupta started his academic career with Elitte College of Engineering, Sodepur, Kolkata, under the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, as a professor and HOD of the Civil Engineering Department. He was recently involved with the environmental management and eco-planning of mushroom development for the Maheshtala textile cluster (1,000 units), near Kolkata, India.

He earned a B.E. (Civil) degree from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur, under Calcutta University, in 1974 and completed his Ph.D. (Env. Sc.) from the University of Kalyani in 2018.
