Joel Oppenheimer, P.E., F.ASCE, a senior vice president at STV Inc., has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Oppenheimer oversees STV’s Maryland Transportation and Infrastructure practice, and is an active mentor at the firm, currently mentoring four people. He is also an inspirational/motivational speaker who for the past 15 years has presented his “Building a Better Life – Concrete Steps for Success” seminar series for STV, the University of Maryland Senior Capstone class, MDSPE, CEAM, WTS, the Maryland Quality Initiative, MDOT Transportation Business Units and other engineering organizations.
President of ASCE’s Maryland Section in 2001-02, he also served as Chair of the Section during the celebration of the Society’s 150th Anniversary. He has won three major ASCE Maryland Section awards: Young Engineer of the Year (1993), Civil Engineer of the Year (2013) and Meritorious Service to the Civil Engineering Profession (2019), making him the only Maryland ASCE member to win all three and earning him a newly created honor called the “Trifecta Award.”
Oppenheimer is the Maryland State Mathcounts Coordinator and the Baltimore/Chesapeake/Howard Chapter Coordinator, a position he has held for more than 20 years. As well, he is secretary of the Executive Board for the Engineer’s Club of Baltimore and a docent for the historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Baltimore.
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979 with a BSE degree in civil and urban engineering. He received his master’s degree in engineering administration from the George Washington University in 1988. He is a professional engineer in Maryland, eight other states and Washington, D.C.
