As civil engineers, you are uniquely qualified to lead Society’s infrastructure conversation – indeed, you know firsthand how infrastructure works.
Civil engineers are at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment. With a mission to protect the public health, safety, and welfare, civil engineers need to be at the table with lawmakers to ensure infrastructure gets strategic, sustained investment, with careful preparation for the needs of the future.
One program that teaches you how to advocate and influence your elected leaders is the Legislative Fly-In. This two-day event gives members a chance to learn about the legislative process, key ASCE legislative priorities, and techniques and best practices to lobby legislators face-to-face on issues important to the civil engineering profession. At last year’s event, members advocated for aviation, water, and water resources infrastructure legislation, as well as urging members of Congress to draft a comprehensive infrastructure bill.
This year, the Society is gearing up for its 20th Fly-In event. Members from every state will make their way to Capitol Hill to participate in over 310 congressional visits. The event will host Senator Tom Carper, Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Rodney Davis as the keynote speakers, and Neil Pedersen, executive director at the Transportation Research Board.
